Welcome

Welcome to The Apple Core Challenge.

This mini course will show you how to make a small worm farm big enough to transform an apple core into soil.

It's a fun way to try out worm farming without taking up much space.

If you enjoy it, then you can get a bigger worm farm and start feeding your new pets more and more food, making more and more soil.

Things to gather for this project (get some help from your parents with the materials):

  1. A small bucket with a lid, even a 1 litre yoghurt container or ice cream container will do the job.
  2. You need to make some holes in your container, so the worms can travel out into your garden. [Use power tools with an adult] You can use a drill with a 14mm drill bit. I use a drill bit that cuts a circle, called a spade drill bit, but I've also seen spur point or brad point drill bits that look like they do a similar job. Talk with the salespeople in your local hardware store to get the best advice, and please always put safety first.
  3. Tiger Worms (composting worms) to get started - you can often get some from a friend with a thriving worm farm. These are also sold in boxes at hardware stores, or you could look online for someone selling worms.
  4. Bedding material - if you get worms from an existing worm farm, then a generous amount of the material from the worm farm will help them settle into a new home easily.
  5. An apple core to feed the worms.
  6. You need somewhere to 'plant' the worm farm in the ground. I have large planters with buckets submerged into them, but you could use a five litre bucket of soil, with worm farm submerged into the soil.

Off we go. Congratulations - you're about to become a worm farmer!
